A Japanese patient with septic shock recovered after multidisciplinary treatment

Recently, a 47-years old Japanese patient was discharged from the Gastroenterology Department of our hospital. The patient was diagnosed with septic shock, infectious diarrhea, and multiple organ dysfunction. After joint treatment efforts of the Gastroenterology Department and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the patient regained his health quickly and expressed gratitude during discharge.

On January 17, a Japanese national was bought to the fever clinic of our hospital by his boss. The patient had consumed uncooked meat and had developed diarrhea, fever, nausea, and asthenia. As the patient’s condition was serious, Dr. Hou Jiewei immediately admitted the patient to our hospital and ordered blood tests and chest and abdomen CT. The next day, the patient developed tachypnea and was hypotensive, his oxygenation index was 163 which is a risk index of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). As the Japanese patient didn’t understand the Chinese language and spoke limited English, he felt scared, confused, and helpless, so Dr. Atik of the International Medical Administration was called for help communicating with the patient. Dr. Atik calmed the patient, explained to him about his condition and that he would be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment to improve his condition, which gave the patient more confidence. The team of doctors at ICU continuously monitored the patient's vital signs. As the patient's blood culture report was positive for staphylococcus aureus, the team of doctors at ICU administered him advanced anti-infection therapy and continuously monitored his vitals. Two days later, the patient felt much better and was sent back to the general wards for recovery. Now, as the patient has fully recovered and is ready to discharge, he expressed his satisfaction and gratitude.
