International Medical Specialized Training Series

“One Step Forward Towards Internationalization”

What to do when I face a foreign patient?

I can't speak English, and he can't speak Chinese. What should we do with the language barrier?

I can speak English, but I don't understand the professional terms. I can only show him by making signs. Is that OK?

I am afraid of using the wrong grammar, I am afraid that my pronunciation is not good ...

All the above are the problems we may encounter in the process of international medical treatment. Maybe you will think that I will not encounter foreigners during my daily clinical work, and do not have to worry about the embarrassing situation of communicating in English. However, according to the data: the number of foreign residents in Shenzhen is up to 30,000. As a model of Shenzhen's Internationalization, Nanshan District receives more than 2,000 foreign patients per year, and our hospital receives more than 400 foreign patients per year, which means that a doctor in our hospital, could likely encounter foreign patients during clinic work.

So how can these problems be solved? Don't worry, we can help you out!

In order to improve the International medical service level of medical personnel, enhance the comprehensive strength of foreign-related medical services, incubate more international medical talents, and provide learning opportunities for relevant knowledge and skills, the International Medical Administration invited experts to hold a series of specialized International medical training, and carried out the first and second training courses on December 14 and 15, respectively. The courses cover cross-cultural communication skills, International medical service standards and norms.

Vice President Wang Lin was specially invited to deliver a speech for the opening of the international medical training course. Vice President Wang Lin pointed out that when we mention international medical care, we can't help thinking, what is international medical care? Why we carry on international medical services? How to do international medical care well? With these questions, we will explore the road of international medical development.

The first session of the training was delivered by Professor Qian Qingwen, full-time professor of Hospital Management Research Institute of Tsinghua University. Professor Qian mentioned about his own experience as a resident doctor in the United States for 7 years. Through vivid cases, he explained to the participants that addressing the needs of patients, promotes the development of international health care. He pointed out that the focus of internationalization is not only a simple language problem, but a deeper connotation lies in cultural differences, and cultural cognition is the key factor leading to poor communication. To do a good job in international medical treatment, the key is to enhance cross-cultural awareness and communication skills, respect each other's cultural differences, try to understand their values and habits, and avoid misunderstandings due to cultural conflicts.

The second session of the training was delivered by Professor Wang Hua, director of the Institute of Hospital Management, Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Professor Wang Hua mainly introduced the standards, certification systems and best practices of the international medical service field. Through theoretical teaching, practical operation and case analysis, the differences of JCI, KTQ, ACHS and other certification systems are explained, which made participants fully understand the quality requirements and process specifications of international medical services.

Medicine is a global field, and with the increase of global medical cooperation, the demand for international medical talents is also increasing. According to the feedback of the participants, by attending international medical training sessions, they can pursue the relevant knowledge and skills required for the standard international medical treatment, which will greatly improve the ability of medical personnel in international medical treatment and bring more opportunities for their career development. In addition, the international medical training also provides an opportunity for healthcare personnel to communicate with professionals in the field, through which they can learn about the latest developments in international healthcare.

With the acceleration of Shenzhen's Internationalization process, the development trend of international medical care is sustained. Having been based on the national "Belt and Road" development strategy and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area planning and layout, IMA of our hospital will seize the development opportunities, build an international exchange platform, and create a new development pattern of international health care.
